Have an old-fashioned fun time making these tradional, aromatic Christmas ornaments with your children or friends.
½ cup butter
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
½ cup molasses
1 egg, separated
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoons ginger
2 cups flour
In a large bowl, cream together butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, molasses and egg yolk. Mix together, all remaining ingredients, except egg white. Add slowly to butter mixture to form a stiff dough. Shape into a ball and chill for 1 hour. Roll dough onto a floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Use Christmas cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease cookie sheet. Brush cut-outs lightly with egg white. Bake 8 minutes until crisp. Make a hole, while still hot 1 inch from the top of cookie, then cool. Ice if you choose and thread with your choice of ribbon, string, twine, gold cord, and so on.
