Northwest bed and breakfastsBy Jennifer Ferrero

Have you ever stayed in a bed and breakfast? The experience is distinctly different from staying in a hotel, because many times you are staying in someone's home. Often the homes are well-preserved Victorians, or perhaps Craftsman style with spanning porches, and broad dining rooms.
The breakfast
When you awake at a B&B, expect wonderful smells like creme caramel french toast wafting from the kitchen. B&B's are usually known for their ability to put on a beautiful gourmet breakfast with a main dish, fruits, yogurts, muffins and breads, juices, and of course coffee.
The breakfast part is usually the best portion of the getaway. Special recipes are handed down through the generations and are usually enjoyed around an antique table with linens and china. It feels like a holiday – it's truly a special experience.
The bedrooms, and amenities
B&B's can be homes in a suburban or metropolitan neighborhood, or they can be castles with verdant landscaping. They are so diverse, exploring them never gets old.
The bedrooms are usually customized with feather-laden four poster beds, or maybe a fireplace. For a romantic getaway, the best part is that often there are no televisions in the bedrooms. It's a time for you and your partner to focus completely on each other.
Here's why you should stay at a B&B:
- Generally friendly owners with interesting backgrounds
- Delicious homemade breakfasts using special recipes
- Often perks like feather beds, fireplaces in rooms, libraries, sitting rooms, and places to relax
- Most are in classic, remodeled homes with antiques and/or restored furniture
- Usually centrally located for ease of attending events in town, with a comfortable bed at the end of the day
- Many will ask what time you'd like breakfast served, in case you need to leave early or get up late
- Some will offer hot tub suites, or other "fun" amenities for guests
- Many will have movie collections for those relaxing in their rooms
- History, history, history
Other considerations:
- You may run into other people staying in a B&B and you may have breakfast together
- Breakfasts are usually diverse, so if you have special diet restrictions, you might need to make accommodations
- Many do not have televisions in their rooms
