Lake Reflections: The Broken Foot

By Shelley Hepler

The summer of 1999 my husband and I purchased our first ski boat. The family was so excited and proud of our beautiful white and navy Cobalt. We had wonderful visions of our kids wakeboarding, slalom skiing and tubing. All the gear was purchased, and our weekend launch was planned.

Literally two days before our big family event, our daughter, Sarah, broke her foot. None of us could believe the timing! Here it was, the first summer weekend, and our daughter was going to be in a cast from her knee to her toes for eight weeks. The poor darling!

Sarah was a trooper and never complained. She helped with the ski ropes, listened to the stereo, sun bathed, dangled her fingers over the side, and was the first to hop out and lash the boat to the dock when needed.

Funny, she never really learned to board or ski. Tubing was just a bit too crazy for her taste. However, summer after summer she loved going to the lake and spending time on that boat.

There was no lovelier water nymph than my daughter, Sarah.
