Karen Does My Hair: Take home products for summer

By Karen Pagliaro

Depending on where you live, your hair is going to be exposed to dry or moist heat this summer. I would like to share with you a few of my favorite products that will help protect and nurture your hair. I use Paul Mitchell products in my salon because the company uses the finest ingredients and cutting-edge technology. As a company, they were "green" before it was cool to be green.

Paul Mitchell products are divided into categories, we call them our Take Home products. These are my recommendations:

Clarifying: Chlorine is a metal, that's why it has a chemical reaction to chlorinated water. The result: green hair! Shampoo Three is your product combat brassy, green hair.

Moisture: A must have is Awapuhi Shampoo. Hawaiian Awapuhi helps balance moisture and prevent dryness. Also, Awapuhi Moisture Mist Hydrating Spray. We cut hair in my salon with this product to put in moisture and shine. And it smells yummy! You can even spray it on your skin. Very refreshing.

Smoothing:  I love Super Skinny Serum. A few drops will do. It's light weight silicones penetrates deep into hair shaft. It smooths, conditions and seals the hair. It also reduces drying time and speeds up styling time. Super Skinny Relaxing Balm is another product. It has wheat and vegetable proteins that are teamed up with conditioning ingredients to protect hair from within. It resists humidity and reduces drying time by displacing water and constricting every hair strand.

Strength: My favorite is Super Strong Treatment. It rebuilds, restores and strengthens. This product works by penetrating deep into the internal structure of hair:

Style: You'll love Express Style.  This product reduces drying time and has UV protection. Combine this product with Super Skinny Serum and Wow!

Hold: For all-day hold use Extra-Body Firm Finishing Spray. It gives shine and humidity resistant. Also, protects against sun damage.

I personally use Tea Tree Shampoo at least once a week. This product is an invigorating cleanser. As implied by it's name, it has tea tree oil as an ingredient. It is a natural essential oil with antiseptic and disinfectant properties. We use tea tree oil in the salon for an invigorating massage.  Here are the Tea Tree products I recommend:

Tea Tree Lavender Mint: This is the top selling shampoo in my salon. It smells great, is hydrating and calming. It's color safe, too. I first heard of it from a client who had stayed in a very nice hotel in Cabo. The line includes shampoo and conditioner, body washes and body butters.

Thicken Up for Extra-Body: This a must have especially if you have fine, limp thin hair. It also has UV protection. Use it with Super Skinny Extra-Body Daily Boost root lifter to add body and volume.

Original Tree Tree Shampoo: I wouldn't be doing this product line justice if I didn't tell about this line. Shampoo Tea Tree: Gentle Wash is what I personally use to keep my scalp in good condition.

Here's a tip for school aged kids: lice hate tea tree oil! Take a little oil and rub into the scalp before sending your kiddos to school. They'll get a treatment while warding off the pesky little creatures.

A word of caution! Products that are sold in grocery stores or on the Internet are black market or counterfeit. The bogus products have been found to have bacteria and contain other impurities that can make you sick. Paul Mitchell company has been a pioneer in pointing this problem out to the public and to professionals. The only way to guarantee authenticity is to buy from a Paul Mitchell professional salon.

Enjoy your summer and....Remember, It's All About The Hair!
